Treats from London

We had a 15 year run heading over to London and beyond at least once a month, and have eaten and drank our way through that town more times that we can count. Our staples are Borough Market on a Saturday, any time at Le Petit Maison, C London, Hakkasan (Mayfair)… and now the new hottest spot: Stanley’s in Chelsea. Here are some of the recipes that were inspired by the places we love in London-town:

Famous Flaky Puff Pastry Pizza

My favorite hotel is in London and unfortunately they have an amazing late-night room service menu.  One troublesome menu item is their pizza made with puff pastry and is only one dial away from being brought to your door.  After a few tries we created a version that can be served as an appetizer of…

Mini Puff Pastry Pizzas

The after hours menu at Claridge’s Hotel in London is a spectacular celebration of late night food which is troublesome, especially with their puff pastry pizza option dangling out there at 2 AM or so.  It’s too delicious to pass up but do you really need a sheet of pastry dough drenched with cheese, sauce…

Spatchcock Lemon Rosemary Chicken

If you ever stumble upon one of my favorite restaurants, Le Petit Maison, be sure to pop in and order their lemon chicken – as well as just about everything their legendary chef, Raphael, has on the menu. You can find his spots in London, Dubai, Beirut, and Miami. The original is in Nice and…

Bucatini Alle Vongole

When our friends Kait and Luke got married in Lake Como in Italy, a wave of South Carolinians descended on a few of the small villages on the lake. Everyone took to Vongole and it was a staple at most of the meals. When we all got back to Sullivan’s Island we realized that no…

Toasted Cheese Sandwiches

Borough Market sits in the heart of central London, in the shadow of the famous London Bridge, and is a playground for amazing food and drink.  There are food and specialty stands as far as you can see, well at least from the barrel we claim as ours at a wine bar.  We love to spend…

Lamb or Beef ‘Bolognese’

Mix a little cooking skills from Bologna to the great chefs of Crete and you can make a great meat sauce that is perfect with pasta, over clams, or countless other meals like a delicious Greek lasagna.  It is truly delicious and can be made and frozen up to 6 months.  This recipe works perfectly…

Curry Pasta Salad with Broccolini

I like simple side dishes that can be made well ahead of the crowd appearing and the advance work makes the dish all the better because the flavors intensify over time.   This  pasta salad can be made 6 hours in advance and I often mix a little more of the curry mayonnaise and toss…

Beef Carpaccio

Giuseppe Cipriani’s started a world famous bar & restaurant, Harry’s Bar in Venice, Italy. He created not only the Bellini there but a few yers later he introduced the world to Beef Carpaccio.  “Carpaccio” has now become most types of beef, veal, lamb or fish that has been thinly sliced and served as an appetizer.…

Crispy Braised Pork Belly Sandwiches

What the heck.   A crispy pork belly sandwich is always a hit.  It’s just one of that appetizers that don’t pop up often and people really enjoy them.  This requires a little prep work but it is pretty much cooks itself.Ingredients 1 3 pound slab if pork belly, center cut, skin left on1/4 cup granulated…

Bacon, Cheese & Crisp Lettuce on Toasted Rolls

A simple snack that can be served all day long should be just that, simple and tasty.  A fresh toasted potato roll, three strips of roast bacon, and a thickly cut slice of sharp cheddar cheese make a delicious treat.  Each ingredient is key so get the best bacon from your butcher, top quality extra…

Shepherd’s Pie with Curry and Cheddar Potatoes

Like every recipe on this blog, we have to tinker with it… so we have taken the traditional shepherd’s pie and hit it with an over-the-top flavor profile that brings an often bland dish to a new level. We made this for a brunch and it was a big hit. You can make it in…

Roasted Tomato Carpaccio

When I serve our traditional Carpaccio there is always a lot of sauce, arugula and parmesan left-over. Also, there are more than a few guests that either don’t eat raw meat or don’t eat it all. In the winter months when tomatoes are not up to par, I roast Roma tomatoes at a low temperature…

Cipriani’s Bellini

In Venice, everyone pops into Harry’s Bar for a Bellini, a drink they have made famous and serve at their amazing restaurants from Dubai to New York.  These drinks are a great start for cocktails before dinner. Makes 2 Bellinis Ingredients 1/4 cup very cold white peach puree (only white peaches, never yellow). Look to…
